The break-up of a relationship is one of the most stressful situations anyone can endure, more especially when children are involved. Lives are shattered with this harrowing experience, and sadly the truth is that a high percentage of break-ups can be avoided.

Sometimes we just resign ourselves to the fact that the relationship is coming to an end, and we give up. If you consider your relationship to be worth saving, then it’s most certainly worth fighting for. This will take hard work, and three basic essentials :

1) Communication is vitally important. When communication lines are cut, the inevitable parting of the ways will ensue. Only by talking about your problems do you have any chance of resolving them. This will require calm, open discussion between both of you.

2) Honesty is imperative. All relationships must first and foremost be based on total honesty between both partners. You will have to be frank and open with each other regarding your individual needs, likes and dislikes in all areas of your relationship.

3) Compromise is every bit as important. A one-sided relationship has very little chance of survival. If you have communicated honestly with each other you will recognise areas where compromise is warranted. This will apply to both partners, and providing you both keep your side of the bargain, there’s no reason why your relationship can’t flourish.
